Wayne Helmer Viuhkola, 69, of Astoria, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, in Astoria.
He was born July 8, 1940, in Astoria, to Aldrick E. and Celia R. (Weist) Viuhkola.
Mr.
Viuhkola was a commercial fisherman and net builder most of his life.
He was the owner and captain on the New Mexico and the Piky. After he
gave up fishing, he bought and operated the Brass Rail Restaurant and
Lounge in downtown Astoria.
Family members said he enjoyed
hosting the many social gatherings that were held at his home. He loved
card games, watching sports and cooking
He is survived by a
niece, Bobbie Jean Hunt and her husband, John, of Belfair, Wash.; three
cousins, David Viuhkola and Marjorie Stanard of Portland and Gary
Viuhkola of Clatskanie; a cousin-in-law, Yvonne Viuhkola Collins of
Astoria; six second cousins, Erin and Erron Viuhkola of Lake Oswego,
Taylor and Verin Viuhkola of Tualatin, Carrie Barton of Kirkland,
Wash., and Marsha Stanard of Portland; seven special friends, Clara
Holdiman and Willie Nyberg of Warrenton, Bonnie Day of Vancouver,
Wash., Toby Collins and Debby and Walter Miner, all of Astoria, and
Mike Osborne of Newberg; and numerous other friends.
At Mr. Viuhkola's request, there will be no service.
Memorial
contributions may be given to the city of Astoria for a memorial
engraving at the Maritime Memorial in Astoria, in care of Caldwell's
Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
