Douglas Edward Ranta, 40, of Seaside, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, in Seaside.
He was born Feb. 12, 1970, in Astoria, to Keith T. and Sheila M. (McCoy) Ranta. His parents survive, residing in Astoria.
He attended Seaside Elementary School, John Jacob Astor Elementary, Astoria Middle School and Astoria High School. He received a general equivalency diploma from Clatsop Community College.
He married Brooke Goza. They later divorced.
Mr. Ranta commercial fished and worked in construction.
Family members said he was a patient fisherman as a youngster, and could spend hours in one spot waiting for the bite or floating on an inner tube trying to lure crawfish onto his bait. His hobbies included fishing, clam digging, beachcombing and rock collecting. He also was a skilled welder and an avid reader.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, April Ranta of Astoria and Allison Ranta-Reuterdahl of Aberdeen, Wash.; a brother and sister-in-law, Todd and Valeri Ranta of Astoria; a nephew and niece, Tyler and Hailey Ranta of Astoria; five aunts, Sharon Keist of Battleground, Wash., Shelby Mogenson of Astoria, Ann Jordan of Omaha, Neb., Marilyn Ball of Sisters and Mary Alice Ranta of Seattle; 11 cousins, Jeff Vance and Bob Ball of Portland, Janelle Smith of Forest Grove, Kim Hughes of Missouri, Kelly Eldred of Battleground, Kary Doerfler of Seattle, Dan Leinweber of Hammond, Mick Leinweber of Naselle, Wash., Rick Ball of Scobey, Mont., Erin Jordan of Omaha and Alisa Jordan of Boston; and a girlfriend, Angela Cushman of Seaside.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thelma and Pete McCoy and Ted and Alice Ranta; and an aunt, Susan Leinweber.
A private gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date.
