Jack N. Summerfield, 84, of Seaside, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, in Seaside.

He was born June 11, 1925, in Portland, to William H. and Viola M. (Stockdale) Summerfield.

He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1943, and from the Merchant Marine Academy in Long Island, N.Y. He received his graduate degree in social work from the University of Chicago.

During World War II, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines.

In 1952, he married Mary Ellen Turlay at her Clatsop Plains home in Warrenton. She preceded him in death in 1978.

He married Lucille Matthews. She survives, residing in Seaside. The couple were married for more than 30 years.

Mr. Summerfield's varied career in social work in Oregon included working in Marian and Klamath counties and as an administrator of Lincoln and Douglas counties. He also spent 17 years as a social work administrator in Washington, D.C., for the Department of Health Education and Welfare/Health and Human Services. The last two years before retiring, he was at Fort Lewis, Wash., in the adjutant's office.

Family members said his greatest love was for his family and friends. He also loved travel (even to the store), the ocean, college sporting events, the Hammond Boat Basin, ships and watching birds on the Necanicum River.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Rachel and Gordon Vickrey of California, Jan Matthews of Oregon and Jane Summerfield of Washington; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Brenda Summerfield of Missouri and Kirk and Linda Matthews of Hawaii; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Matthews, in 2000.

A private graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Seaside Public Library, or a charity of one's choice, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
