Florence Elizabeth 'Betty' Shafer

Florence Elizabeth "Betty" Shafer, 91, of Seaside, died Saturday, March 27, 2010, in Seaside.
She was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Bremerton, Wash., to Robert Joseph and Margaret Ann Driscoll.
On April 11, 1942, she married Richard Warren Shafer on the USS Biscayne in Boston Harbor. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Shafer and her husband lived throughout the world during her husband's military service including Shanghai, China, before the Nationalists' evacuation to Taiwan, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he was an executive officer at the Pacific fleet submarine base. The couple moved to Corvallis in 1960, then to Albany. After her husband's death, she moved to Gearhart in 2004, then to Suzanne Elise Assisted Living in Seaside in 2007.
Family members said that in earlier years she was very involved in Beaver athletics and enjoyed gardening and golfing. She loved spending time with her family, friends and decades of family dogs.
She is survived by a son, Richard Shafer Jr. of Portland; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia and Patrick Wicks of Richland, Wash., Robin and Warren Anderson of Seaside and Jane Shafer of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren, Tereia Thompson and her husband, Sean, of Suquamish, Wash., Elise Anderson and her husband, Brian Law, of Venice, Calif., Shannon Bilstrom and her husband, Evan, of Ventura, Calif., and Rose and Lily Shafer of Portland; and four great-grandchildren, Meghan, John Patrick and Devon Rory Thompson of Suquamish and Aidan Bilstrom of Ventura.
She was preceeded in death by a sister, Patricia North; and two brothers, Robert and Jack Driscoll.
A private memorial service will be held for family members at a later date.
