Carol Mary Kindred, 71, of Astoria, died Saturday, March 27, 2010, in Astoria.
She was born June 10, 1938, in Astoria, to Theodore Roy and Mary Catherine (Blackburn) Haines.
Raised in Astoria, she graduated from Astoria High School in 1956.
On Sept. 4, 1957, she married Robert "Bob" Kindred, in Astoria. They later divorced.
Mrs. Kindred's husband was in the U.S. Air Force, and the family lived in various cities in the U.S. and Germany. She returned to Astoria from Germany in 1969, and has resided here since. She worked at a variety of jobs including as a meat cutter/clerk for a meat company, as a resident advisor at the Job Corps, as a secretary for special education and as a clerk at Astoria Florist.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She volunteered in classrooms, taught Sunday school and was the chair of various church offices. She was also a precinct volunteer and volunteer at March of Dimes.
Family members said she enjoyed traveling, reading, listening to music and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Kelly Grothe of Astoria and Leigh and Mark Brazee of Aurora, Colo.; a son, Robert E. Kindred II and his wife, Rachel, of Juneau, Alaska; six grandchildren, Melissa and Matthew Grothe of Astoria, Tyler and Alyssa Brazee of Aurora and Timothy and Robert Wilson of Juneau; a sister, Donna E. Haines of Hungry Horse, Mont.; an aunt, Liberty Haines Phillips of Florence; a brother-in-law, Marvin E. Tolonen of Sequim, Wash.; her former husband, Robert E. Kindred and his wife, Wanda, of Burlington, Ky.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Ann Kindred, on Dec. 21, 2009; and a sister, Joan K. Tolonen, on March 13, 2010.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 6 and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 7 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary. A graveside service will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Food Bank or Lower Columbia Hospice, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
