Deana Vivian Hatley

July 25, 1919 — September 30, 2010

Deana Vivian Hatley, 91, of Astoria, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, in Portland.

She was born July 25, 1919, in Washtucna, Wash., to Alfred and Dollie (Stockton) Larison. The family moved many times throughout her life before coming to Astoria in the 1940s.

On Oct. 12, 1947, she married Harold Hatley in Astoria. He preceded her in death June 12, 1997. The couple met while she was working for Paragon Packing Company.

Mrs. Hatley loved cooking and spent her career cooking for the school lunch program for the Astoria School District for 25 years. Even after her retirement in 1983, she continued to cook for the electrical lineman at Camp Rilea during their summer training sessions.

Family members said she was a whiz behind a sewing machine and tackled many projects for herself, her family and friends. Her penmanship was extraordinary and was exemplified by the beautiful wedding cakes she made and decorated.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Susan Hatley of West Linn and Tom and Anne Hatley of Albany; and three grandchildren, Scott Hatley of West Linn, Sarah Hatley of Portland and Sam Hatley of Corvallis.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at the First United Methodist Church, 1076 Franklin Ave. A reception will follow at the church.

Private burial will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.

Memorial contributions may be given to Incite Scholarship Fund or the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
