Andrew Edward 'Andy' Young
World War II veteran, age 89
of Olney, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, in Beaverton. He was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Cordova, Alaska, to Daniel Andrew and Dora Anna (Petersen) Young. The family moved from Alaska to Olney when he was 6 years old. He attended Mountain View School and Astoria High School, graduating in 1939. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the ship USS Bushnell, which was in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After his discharge from the Navy in December 1945, he returned to the family farm and has resided there since. On August 20, 1950, he married Myrtle Hedeen in Astoria. She preceded him in death Feb. 8, 1998. Mr. Young worked at Astoria Marine Construction Company and Columbia River Packing Association shipyards as a carpenter for many years. He then went to work for Crown Zellerbach logging company as a boom operator in the early 1950s until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Clatsop County Historical Society, Astoria Elks Lodge No. 180 and Peace Lutheran Church. He was a 4-H Club leader, a lifetime member of Clatsop Post 12 American Legion and a long-term member of the Olney School Board. Family members said his hobbies included farming, logging and entertaining his grandchildren with his stories. He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Daniel and Sue Young of Auckland, New Zealand, and William and Dawn Young and David Young, all of Olney; a daughter, Ann Young of Aloha; seven grandchildren, Katie Sue Young, Joanna Pray and her husband, Robert, and Andrea Young, all of Battleground, Wash., Danny Young and his wife, Michelle, of Fort Benning, Ga., Stephanie Young of Auckland, Andy Young of Blacksburg, Va., and John Young of Olney; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Donald and Eddy Hedeen of Mukilteo, Wash., and Clifford Hedeen of Snohomish, Wash.; and numerous great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, followed by a graveside service and vault interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria, then a reception at the Olney Grange. Memorial contributions may be given to the Columbia River Maritime Museum or the Clatsop County Historical Society, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
