Charolette Nyberg passed away on Jan. 8, at home in Warrenton, surrounded by family.
She was born on March 13, 1943, in Nabb, Indiana, to Charles and Erma Hammonds. As a child, she lived on Green Mountain in a log cabin built by her grandfather.
She married Willard Nyberg on May 14, 1960.
Before the installment of the Astoria Bridge, she worked as a waitress on the Tourist No. 2 ferry. She was a waitress at Pat & Len’s Cafe, and was one of the first women to work at Shakey’s Pizza. Charolette worked as a receptionist at Clatsop Community College for over 20 years.
She and Willard enjoyed traveling, making trips to Australia, Hawaii, Boston and Florida. They visited many national and state parks around the U.S. She was a member of Suomi Hall (being Finnish by marriage) and the Astoria Regatta. She was a master gardener, and enjoyed tole painting.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Erma Houck, and sister, Ruth Morgan.
She is survived by her husband, Willard; her sisters, Peggy Horgan and Brenda Fletchall; her children, Willie Nyberg (Lisa), Shellie O’Connor (Marc) and Mindy Nyberg (Chris); her grandchildren, Brittany Goetsch (Dalton), Kaylee Nyberg (Seth), Dara Stevens (Doug), Josh Sutton (Laura), Gabe Sutton (Andrea), Maggie O’Connor (Nate), Becki O’Connor (Jess), Stephen O’Connor and Jesus Cerpa Mendoza (Vanessa); and 14 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary. A reception will follow at Warrenton Christian Church.
