James Kyle Spain Jr., 92, died June 19, 2018 at his home in Astoria, Oregon.
Spain was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Wallace, Idaho, to James K. and H. Katherine (Anderson) Spain. Shortly thereafter, the Spain’s moved to Southern California, where he grew up, eventually graduating from San Louis Obispo High School in 1943. After graduation, Jim enlisted in the Navy, serving at the Treasure Island Naval Training Center.
Upon completion of his military service, Jim moved to Astoria, to assist his parents with operation of The Service Cleaners, a dry cleaning establishment. It was during this period that Jim met the love of his life, Vera Louise Moore. Jim and Vera were married on Sept. 12, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Astoria. Jim and Vera had three children, two sons and daughter, James, Kyle and Marcia.
Jim and Vera remained active residents of Astoria. Jim was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the United Methodist Church and the Masons. After helping to establish the Service Cleaners, he worked for over 25 years in the Clatsop County Assessor’s Office as a property appraiser. Jim was always known for his conscientiousness, friendliness and integrity. After his retirement, he remained active in the community through additional volunteering with the Food Bank of Astoria, Meals on Wheels and the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Jim is survived by his wife, Vera, of Astoria; two of his children, Kyle (Jane) Spain of Aurora, Colorado, and Marcia (Richard) Long of Gearhart; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Moes of Seaside, Melissa (Jon) Brady of Astoria, Christopher (Medina) Moes of Independence, Erin (Matthew) Shaw of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ian (Jennifer) Spain of Denver, Colorado, Mathew (Elisa) Long of Seaside, James Spain of Aurora, Colorado, and Kiera (Alexander) Todd of Castle Rock, Colorado; and 19 great grandchildren.
At his request, there will be a graveside service for friends and family at the Greenwood Cemetery on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Food Bank of Astoria.
