Virginia (Ginny) Lee Ashbaugh

September 20, 1931 — October 18, 2024

Virginia (Ginny) Lee Ashbaugh was born in Kansas on Sept. 20, 1931, to Harry and Mae Moore. She passed away at the age of 93 on Oct. 18.

She was raised in Fruitland, Idaho, where she met and married Clarence William (Bill) Ashbaugh on July 10, 1948. They later moved to the Astoria area when Bill was stationed at Tongue Point while he was in the U.S. Navy.

Ginny was a homemaker most of her life, and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies and apple pies, to name a few. She was active in Grace Episcopal Church in Astoria for many years, serving on the altar guild and running the annual rummage sale.

After Bill’s retirement in 1988, they became snowbirds and wintered in Yuma, Arizona, for 20 years. They traveled to Canada and Mexico and throughout the U.S., including Hawaii. Ginny enjoyed the warm weather and loved to swim, bike and play shuffleboard. She especially enjoyed “happy hour” with her friends.

Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; and son, Bill Jo; as well as her parents, Harry and Mae; and her siblings, Ethel, Gladys, Hazel, Marjorie, Dorothy, Edna, Wilma, Naomi, Harley, Lawrence, Andy, Forest and Don.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Tom) Castro and Kandy (Kai) Reiss; and grandchildren, Anthony Kelly (Jackie Fretcher), Sara Kelly (Olajuwon Jones), Colton (Diana) Ashbaugh, Jerry (Meredith) Castro and David (Stephanie) Castro; as well as great-grandchildren, Hunter Kelly, Layla Kelly, Olajuwon Jones Jr., Loretta, Colton Jr., James and Bill Ashbaugh, and Malynne and J.D. Castro.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ginny’s name to a charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Clatsop Care Retirement Village and Providence ElderPlace for their excellent care and companionship.
